DIY Fabric Embellished Towels
Hi guys! Welcome to day eight of my 12 Days of Handmade Gifts! Today I am going to share a great gift idea for anyone, but it is especially useful for friends who just moved into a new home, or kids away at college. Â These fun fabric embellished towels are really easy to make, and they are so easy to customize. You can make a batch for the whole family in just one afternoon.
Here’s What You Nee:
*Towels
*Fabric (3/8 to 1/2 yard of fabric for bath towels, and 1/4 yard of fabric for tea towels)
*Iron
*Straight Pins
*Scissors
*Sewing Machine and Coordinating Thread
*Trim(optional)
Instructions:
First you need to measure your towel width. If your towel is 36″ wide, you will need to add two inches to the width for your fabric band. Cut a piece that is 2″ plus your width by however tall plus an inch as you want is. So, if my towel is 36″ wide, then I would make my fabric 38″ wide and if I want it to be 7″ tall then you would need it to be 8″. So you would cut a piece to be 8×38 per towel. Once you have your fabric bands cut, warm up your iron. Next, lay the fabric face down on the ironing board and iron the edges under 1/2″ on the top and bottom. Then, fold the sides under 1/2″ and press. Lay your band on top of your towel. Measure and mark where you want it to go so it is even. Take one of your sides and fold it again over the side of the towel, pin. Pin all the way around the band. Make sure everything is straight and even. Now top stitch all the way around the band 1/8 of an inch away from the edge. Clip threads. And that’s it. If you want to add trim, just pin it down to your towel in an even line and stitch down.
Aren’t they fun! I made the set of bath towels and the kitchen towels in a little over an hour, and I am a slow seamstress. I love how easy you can customize these just by the colors of the towels and the prints of the fabrics! You can even add trims to them, which is fun on the kitchen towels. It’s awesome how just a little bit of fabric goes a long way. I am definitely going to make some of these for myself sometime with some Lecien floral fabric. Their prints are so lovely! I hope you guys will give this one a try sometime! It’s really easy and fun! I’ll be back tomorrow with another holiday handmade gift idea. Until then….
Happy Crafting!
