DIY Vintage Yarn Wrapped Christmas Tree

yarn xmas treeDSC_5469Hi everyone! I hope you all are enjoying my Kitschmas series! I have a couple more vintage Christmas decorating diy’s to share with you before I move into my diy kitschmas gifts. Today I am going to share a tutorial on how to make a yarn wrapped christmas tree! This little diy tree comes from a 1957 Issue of a vintage Better Homes and Garden’s Christmas Ideas Magazine. Check it out:

Here’s What You Need:

*Cardboard or Plywood

*Yarn, a few colors

*Hot Glue gun and Hot Glue

*Christmas Ball Ornament

Here’s The Original:

bhg 55 Untitled-87 Untitled-88I used cardboard for my base. I drew out the pattern as per the instructions. Then I started by gluing my first yarn color end to the bottom of one piece and wrapped the yarn snugly around the base several times. Then I glued the yarn down and snipped the yarn off. I then wrapped the other piece to have the same amount of yarn of that color and be the same height as close as I could get it. Wrap your split areas separately. Then wrap another color of yarn, then another, until you have both tree pieces completely wrapped. I placed dabs of glue in ocassionaly to keep the yarn in place a little more. Then assemble your trees together. I glued my bottom and top splits to the tree so my tree would sit like I wanted it. Take the top off of your christmas ball. Glue the ball top down onto the tip of the tree. Glue and wrap yarn around the base of the ornament and then around the top of the tree a bit.

DSC_5467 DSC_5466 DSC_5473I think this tree turned out really cute! I added my straw garland to it and it sits on my shelf with all my vintage deer. IT is a cute piece of decor and I love the kitschiness it adds to my living room. I found it really pretty easy to make. I was able to assemble everything while I watched a movie with the hubby in just a couple of hours. I had so much fun making it and I have to say I was pretty happy with the size of it too! It looks small in the magazine but it is actually over a couple of feet tall. I hope you all will give it a try sometime. It would even be a great craft for kids if you use a different glue or help then with the glue gun. I’ll be back tomorrow with a fun Christmas ornament. Until then…

Happy Crafting!
